Okami

If you're a fan of anime or adventure games, this one is perfect for you. The gameplay is similar to Zelda, yet fresh with new ideas and concepts. Okami's biggest draw is the ability to draw (pun intended) over the game to affect what happens. Okami is a big contender for game of the year 2006.

By far the best game to come out for the PS2 this year. The interface feels similar to the N64 Zelda games, and this is the next best thing to Zelda available for the PS2. The Celestial Brush mechanic is brilliant, the artwork is hypnotizing, and this is definitely a long quest - there were at least 5 different times where I though, "...yup, this is gonna be the last boss..." - but the story just kept growing. Expect to push around 60 hours plus on your first run through. I cannot recommend this game enough. Best thing I've played since Shadow of the Colossus.

Here Comes the Sun

As a platformer, Okami (Clover Studio, 2006) covers all the basics for a good game- simple, responsive controls, a likeable set of characters, and a stable, believable storyline. But what sets it apart from almost every other platformer I've played is the sheer majesty of its medium.
Okami is the story of the sun goddess Amaterasu, whom you control throughout the game in the form of a wolf. Your job is to bring the color and life back into the world and save your village against the much-referenced classic villain, Orochi, the seven-headed dragon. Using your Celestial Brush (which, if you'll notice, is the wolf's tail tip!) to alter the world around you, can can make the sun rise, cut down enemies, and grow trees, among many other uses. This unique aspect to gameplay makes this standard platformer into something truly special.
The game is decidedly Japanese in origin, and any anime- or Japanese culture-buff is going to recognize a lot of the monsters and cultural references that occur throughought the game. Even if you don't, Okami is still a feast for the senses, with its lush graphics and sounds.
Okami comes very highly recommeded from almost every major game reviewer, and understandably so. Pick this one up and soon- it's very likely to become a favorite.
Awaken the Sun God

Okami is one of the most unique and enjoyable games to have been released in its year. The player controls a wolf who is actually the great sun god Ameratsu. Thought the game, you use a "brush" to draw symbols that activate powers. You can make the sun rise by drawing a circle in the sky and the moon rise by drawing a moon. You acquire powers by finding the 12 lesser brush gods, who recognize you as Ameratsu, become a part of you can give you their powers. The game has a long and satisfying story line, and the art of the entire game is like a feudal Japanese painting, looking as though the entire game was actually indeed painted. The amount of detail in the artwork is astounding.
