Thats exactly what this game is....God!
Frequent frustrations keep this from being the perfect game.

This isn't going to make me very popular with the fan boys, but I felt that God of War falls slightly short of the hype.
I just recently bought the game, after hearing great things about it. Don't get me wrong, the game is worth buying, especially at its new Greatest Hits price.
I'm the type of person who is disappointed when movies have sex and violence just for the sake of having it, not because it actually adds to the story. God of War crosses that line a number of times, proudly showing off the fact that blood and sex sell. However, I didn't factor that into the 8.6 I gave the game. I knew well ahead of time that the game was hyper-violent and I don't let my kids watch me play it. I just wanted to mention it in case there were any other parents out there who have been living under a rock.
The game is fun. The graphics are nice, the story is engaging, and the controls are tight. So why am I not as enamored with God of War as most people I talk to? There were several times during the game where I found myself getting frustrated to the point where I turned the game off and came back to it later. Sure, that's to be expected once in a while from a game of this type, but it also tends to take you out of the game a bit. A great game will immerse you rather than have you looking for something less stressful to do. The game does take mercy on you after you have died several times to the same situation and offers to turn the difficulty down. But let's be honest. We're gamers. We'd rather suffer through than give in to a condescending PS2.
Maybe it is unfair to compare the two, but I enjoyed Resident Evil 4 quite a bit more than God of War. Perhaps I'm just getting old and my reflexes are starting to fail me, who knows? What I do know is that I've played plenty of other games recently that didn't make me want to throw the controller through the TV.
I realize this came off a bit harsh but that shouldn't stop you from picking up the game. It's a worthy addition to your library as long as you don't give in to the hype machine.
Great game.

Back when it came out, this game was a reason to buy a ps2 and component cables. Awesome cut-scenes, graphics, and over the top violence make this a memorable experience only to be topped by the sequel. As to the other review here who preferred Resident Evil 4 over God of War, I am the exact opposite. I tried RE4 out but it was too slow for my tastes and I returned it. I enjoy the violence and sex that this game added. If you loved the movie 300, then you will absolutely love god of war!
This game is awesome

This is the one game on the PS2 that everyone has to own or at least play, doesn't matter what type of gamer you are (unless you're a kid). Great graphics, best gameplay out of almost any of the ps2 games, unforgettable storyline, interesting (whereas even god of war 2 was more bland), and fun to play anytime. Also, unlike some other ps2 games (GTA, etc.) there is NO swearing (nice to see). Highly recommended.

Great game, everybody should go buy the game. I only have two problems. One is that you have to do some backtracking. The other is I wasn't really sure of what I was doing at some point, like the Pandora Temple, I was just walking around, killing enemies, and solving puzzle until a cutscene occurs, but other than that a great game and a must buy for ps2 owners. A Must Have Game

Obviously, by now, you have heard the rave reviews on this game. If not, then listen up. This game has it all. Action, Gore, Excellent Graphics and a surprisingly good storyline. The only exception of perfection to this game would be repeating a lot of things when you die. But you're probably used to that with most games anyways.
Enjoy!
A++++ game

in the game you start as kretos, in ancient greece, saying now even the gods have abandoned you, and throw your self from a cliff. the you start the game 2 weeks earlier to see exactly what happened to kretos. this game isnt super long but it still provides an incredible story line that makes you never want to put your controller down. the graphics are pretty good, higher than most games. in this game you ally yourself with the gods and they lend you thier powers to overtake the god of war such as zues's thunder bolts and medusas gaze, and unforgetably kretos's swords, which are attached to his arms so he can wildly swing the around and hit enemys that are more than a swords reach away. if you are in to greek mythology this is definitaly the game for you, and whent you beat it youll most definitaly want to play god of war 2. this game is godlike!!!!!

The graphics in this game are some of the best you can find on the ps2. The game has a very good story about greek mythology and the game itself is just fun to play. The only problem about the game- pretty short but theres other things to do after you beat it and a super hard mode you unlock after beating it. You should definetly pick this game up if you dont have it already. 5/5
Kratos.....Nuff Said!!

When this game came out, I rented it for a week. This game consumed me until I had to return it. If you are a fan of platformers or the action/adventure genre, this is a must have. God of War was a turning point for games of this type. Many copycats have come out since, but none can touch the glory of Kratos. The graphics in this game are some of the most impressive that I have seen on the PS2. The controls are easy to learn, and the combos easy to master. Easily one of my favorite games on the PS2. I have not had the pleasure of getting hands on with the sequel yet, but will as soon as someone trades it to me. Get GoW now if you haven't already!!

I don't know what to say other than this is one of the most enjoyable games to come out on PS2. It's what's missing in a lot of games, a simple joy in the violence and killing things in an interesting way while still having a coherent storyline. This was probably the last game I played a lot on PS2, but I think it still holds up well. The only knock is they stuck some rather dumb puzzles in it that were more trial and error than really something clever to figure out.
Not what I anticipated

I had high hopes for this one and though it did give me some of what it promised, it failed to live up to my expectations. Don't spear me and hear me out first:
Firstly, let's talk about the first thing anyone notices when we play a game - graphics. God of War is beautiful. Nobody can deny that. The textures are well done and Kratos is quite the sight to see when rippin' and tearin' through the hordes. There is no lack of stuff to see and at times the scale is just epic (as a game based on greek mythology should be).
Gameplay is where GoW starts to struggle. To tell the truth, I played the demo of GoW long before I played the game, which basically gave you the entire Aegean Sea level all the way up to the Hydra Heads. The level was supremely well thought out with the Hydra attacking you and popping out of nowhere all along the way. It was tense and it was awesome.
Sure it is fun to run around and rip heads off medusas the first couple of times, but after stabbing the 17th minotaur in the throat, it loses it's "awesome" and you start to feel wanting. Everything starts to get repetitive. It is okay, as most games are to some degree I guess.
The main thing I wanted out of God of War was epic boss battles. The fight with the Hydra in the demo made me thirsty for much more, and in that I was really deprived and most annoyed. There are only three boss battles in the whole game. The first one - the Hydra - being the best and the most thought out. I loved how they implemented it and presented it to you. You could see the Hydra through the whole level and the whole level was like a long and elaborate boss battle. It was brilliant. The second boss battle was more typical and lacked as much innovation, which is all right I guess. My beef here is the lack of fights worth playing for. Three is not enough to satiate me.
One other thing that also bugged me was Pandora's Temple. After slugging it out through constant battle and speeding through areas like a lawnmower strapped to a rocket, we get to Pandora's Temple and suddenly it is like the brakes were put on. The inclusion of puzzles was good don't get me wrong, but it was a vast difference from the earlier portions of the game.
Speaking of which, the game is short. Very short. I mean really, really short. An 8-hour completion time, and that is if you suck at action games like I do. Do they give you any incentive to play it again and again? Not really. You have plenty of extras and harder difficulties but after the first go through I just don't feel like playing it anymore.
To Sum it up:
Graphics:10
Sound:8
Story:8
Gameplay:5
Re-playability:4
Pros: Great graphics, superior sound, cinematic story
Cons: Not enough bosses, repetitive gameplay, shock factor gets old fast, not enough to keep you coming back

The Gods Have Spoken

Upon it's debut, "God of War" was touted as one of the top games for the PS2 and went on to win many game of the year awards. That alone speaks volumes of how cool this game is to play, but the reason I enjoyed this game so much was because it had all the key ingredients for a successful game playing experience. First of all, Kratos makes a badass antihero in terms of design and mannerisms.
He controls easily and intuitively during gameplay thanks to beautiful fluidic animation.
The cutscenes scream "wannabe movie makers" and I can easily see this motion picture movie idea possibly being kicked around by Sony execs at some point in the future *fingers crossed*
The mythological references seem spot on yet mixed with a nice blend of imagination in character development. And the overall story, while a bit linear, is still quite refreshing and entertaining.
However, in the end it all comes down to gameplay and "God Of War" delivers in spades. A good mixture of hack and slash, puzzle, action, exploration, and visually appealing eye candy graphics makes this game a must have for any gaming library. The sound track isn't to shabby either.
My recommendation: If you don't have this game, May the Gods take pity on your ignorance. Get it, you dope. :P
