Getting Hokey

Reviewed by xeyro on December 27, 2006  |  report this review

EA tried to do an awful lot with this game, unfortunately, most of it came off as gimicky at best. This time around, you travel to the various areas of golf to compete against the greats of the era. Unfortunately, in order to play the greats, you gotta mess around with a bunch annoying created characters. Additionally, "tiger vision" was removed from the game, and replaced with an even more annoying "gamebreaker" shot. Basically, everytime you do something good, your gamebreaker meter fills up a bit. When full, you can employ the power to your shot. This is where the stupid factor kicks in. If the green is in reach from the tee on a par 3, or from the fairway on a par 4 or 5, you will always put the ball in the hole, making the formerly rare and exciting double eagle a routine occurance. Finally, EA changed up the fade and draw control scheme so you have to use the right analog to put spin on the ball, making it impossible to use any more power than a normal swing. There were positive changes made however in the putting. The caddy tip has been removed and replaced with the grid system that was used in previous versions solely for chip shots adding the touch of realism that comes with reading a green. All in all, despite the negatives, they really are minor and the game remains fun.

A Solid Golf Game

The best thing about this game is the create a player program. It is by far the most extensive one of it's kind. I was nearly able to make myself in the game. My brother-in-law was an even closer match. If I wanted to spend even more time I know I could refine my facial features on it. Using this part of the game is so cool because then you're able to play a career mode with you actually in the game!

The gameplay is fairly similar to many of the past Tiger Woods games. Overall, a fun experience with a load of beautiful and accurate locations.
