WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reviewed by dirtyg on November 22, 2007  |  report this review

this game is just incredible, its like Knights of the old republic times 10 and then some, it crosses all expectations i could have of it in the gameplay and story side, the combat is relatively fastpaced and the powers kind of like magic but in the game's world do kind of like the jedi thing in pusjing enemies backwards and up in the air, some of the techniques blow up enemies' weapons and can hack computers and all that weird stuff. the story lets you choose what you will say and you can even cut people off when theyr talking. My one and only letdown that doesnt even take away from the greatness of the game is that the graphics sometimes go like black and white and just like figures with no paint on?(thats the best way i can explain it!!!!)but other than that this is the best game from bioware yet and probably game of the year for both xbox 360, rpg's and overall in all the consoles and game genres.

Very Good just one thing

This is a VERY VERY Good game. The combat is third person like GoW but in my opinion much better because you have "powers". You get to make your own character(face details) and you get to decide what to say to those you have conversations with. This game is packed with little side quests(and I mean PACKED!) along with a superb main story. The only thing I had a titch wit was the frame rate... It just didn't seem highe enough for the game, but the rest of the game covers that up easily. This is a must have game for 360 owners.

A Perfect Universe

I have math question for you. What is Gears of War + Oblivion? The Answer is Mass Effect. This game take place in the future when humans just begin to learn to travel to the farthest reaches of the Galaxy. You are Commander Shepperd. This game has one of the most incredible stories I have ever played, and the way they tell it by the ground-breaking dialogue system. The Characters have a lot to them, they are not just there to help you blow things up. They all have a uniqueness to them. The graphics are very impressive, though most the reviews I read the reviewer didn't care to much for them. I personally love them. The combat is spectacular almost better than Gears of War's third person combat system. Tis game has a high replay value due to its plethora of side-quests and other activities. One thing I really liked about this game is the way Bioware was able to incorporate a level system with the bang-bang shoot 'em up action. Like with all games Mass Effect does slip in a few tiny places. First off is that there is quite a lot of glitches that get you stuck in a wall or a pole. Now my next complaint isn't really a complaint, but what I prefer in every RPG. Once you have beaten the game It should continue from there and allow you to complete side-quests and roam around. Mass Effect an INCREDIBLE game that should be a must buy on everyone's list.

Amazingly An Outstanding Intergalactic RPG

Let me start off by saying I was kinda ify when I first heard about the battle system in this game being like a shooter. RPG gameplay, Shooter type Battle system, doesnt really seem to fit together, right? Well in Mass Effect it does. All in all, it fits in to this game perfectly. After playing it, I wouldnt have it any other way.

The fantasic story will keep you locked into this game from the very begining. The Voice Acting is actually good too. Also, being able to make your own version of Commander Shepard and play as him/her in this furturistic vision of what a space type lifestyle may be like is something like bliss. I actually like going up to every character I poissiblily can and iniciate conversations with them. You never know where a conversation will go. The Dialog tree system is an amazing fleet, not to mention addition, into the RPG genre and I hope more game follow suit. If you want you can be a Renegade and tear characters a new... well you know, or you can be a Paragon and be the charmer. Overall you get to make your Shepard the way you want them to be, not just with looks, but attitude as well. I believe anyone can pick up and play this game, as long as they have time to get into the story. Best Story on the Xbox 360 so far id say.

Sci-fi Movie meets Video Game

Bioware has been know for creating excellent story-driven pieces of work. There was Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2, and Jade Empire. How could anyone even imagine that Mass Effect wasn't going to be a Superb game. This game reminds me of a cross between Gears of War and Knights of the Old Republic. The storyline is so movie-like it brought tears to my eyes and the fighting is very interactive. Once you get to the last 3 hours of gameplay you won't be able to stop until the credits start rolling. This game gets 5-stars in Bizzle-ville

Mass Effect Review
BioWare does it again.
by Erik Brudvig
November 19, 2007 - BioWare endeared itself to Xbox owners the world over when it unleashed Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. It not only filled a void in the Xbox library with an RPG, Knights of the Old Republic did so with style. The follow-up, Jade Empire, solidified BioWare as the preeminent RPG developer on Microsoft's big, black box. Needless to say, expectations have been high for Mass Effect, the studio's first Xbox 360 release. After playing through the game more than once, we can say with confidence that Mass Effect delivers on those expectations. The ride may get a bit bumpy at times, but it's one you don't want to miss.

The game begins with the creation of your Commander Shepard. You're free to go with the model that has been used in all of the marketing, or you can make your own; male or female and with a variety of background and visual options. The decisions you make here have a substantial bearing on the game itself. Some people you meet in the game will deliver different dialogue if you're playing as a woman. Which background options you choose for your character will also shape the way people talk to you throughout the course of the game. The most important decision you'll make will be which character class to start with.
There are three primary character classes in Mass Effect; the solider, the engineer, and the biotic user. Hybrids that mix various aspects of each are also available. The kicker is that they all play vastly different from one another in combat. Based on your class, you'll have access to various powers (the biotics have more than a passing resemblance to the force powers you used in Knights of the Old Republic), technical skills, weapons and armor. The biotic class can use every power, but can only use light armor and pistols. The soldier only gets a single biotic power, but can use any weapon and heavier armor. The engineer, an afterthought class in many other games, steps up in Mass Effect to be a force of its own. He or she can hack locked consoles for info or loot, but can also be a powerhouse in battle. Many of the enemies in Mass Effect are mechanical in design and the engineer has skills geared specifically for taking them down.

Pretty Good

Well while all my fellow compatriots hail this as being the next big step, the better than, the all powerful, I don't fully agree.
The game itself and the storyline are amazing and engrossing. The planets are gorgeous, the space flight and "discovery" of alien worlds will compel you to play for hours on end with no notice of the time passing around you.
The system is modeled after the platform used in BioWare's previous releases but with the notable exception being almost fully real-time in it's action orientation. Where KoToR would pause action and maintained a que of actions for your character to perform, here you cope as it flows and in a lot of cases the sluggish controls end you. I recommend bumping the sensitivity WAY up from standard, but maybe that's just the FPS player in me.
Aside from the battles being handicapped in some places by your inability to perform tasks and respond with powers as quickly as the seamless AI, if you balance and pick your party well, set their AI to active, then they perform admirably. This aspect was learned more than halfway through the game, so if you do this early on your experience is sure to be quite a bit easier. The worst you'll face is a few boss encounters that leave you at their mercy for a few fateful seconds, enough to kill me twice..
I recommend this game this game to anyone who likes RPG's of any kind, enjoys a thorough storyline this is a game you'll enjoy.
My biggest gripe for this is that they set up many achievements that will require 3 or maybe 4 time all the way through to get them all. This game is far to linear for the expansive galaxy they created, and ALL the bases start looking the same by the time you explore your third star cluster. You pretty much will always find your enemies in the same spots etc, no randomness instilled throughout, common enemies re-spawning etc would have been nice at least. So for all but the ultra dedicated I don't see the kind of replay value they seem to think they instilled.
Now I heard somewhere they were supposed to have some add on clusters and expansions coming. If they go Oblivion-style and give us more worlds, a patch for random surface critter battles etc, or a full on expansion pack it would do a lot to make a really good game great.

This is the best game I've played in a long time. The story line grabs you and won't let go, the voice acting is pretty good and the visuals are amazing. If you have a 360, get this, if you have a computer that can handle the PC version then get that instead, it fixed a lot of technical bugs. The only problems with the game are slight bugs that are more annoying then troublesome, some quirky graphics and long loading times. Nothing to have a grudge against though, truly a must get!

This game is incredible. The graphics are great the music is really great. It has one of the best story lines. When you create your character it gets really detailed. You can be a good or bad guy. You get to make big desisions. The only minor thing is that sometimes the graphics can be blurry when a new area is loading, but that dosn't last long. If youve played Knights of the Old Republic you will recagnize a few voices. I highly recamend this game.
