In 2005, when Tecmo released the pinnacle of fighting games on the Xbox that was Dead or Alive Ultimate, there was very little that could be improved on. The game was incredibly smooth, had a great sense of humour, and added online play to make it one of the best in the genre. So when coming to DOA4 you may wonder what they’ve added to an already near perfect formula, but stay with it for a while and you’ll soon realize that there are some notable differences.
Firstly, the story has had a complete overhaul. Usually, the story would be about the Hayate clan, particularly Ayane and Kasumi, squabbling over Ninja honour. That would be all you got. Now, the team have gone back and fleshed the story out greatly. Now, the Hayate clan is now fighting the company DOATEC, who is developing a secret project “Alpha 152” which could destroy anything in its path. The plot even consumes a few of the other characters, so the story is much more interesting, and also much more satisfying, but after some endings, you’re still wondering what the hell happened to some of the characters.
The gameplay in the game remains relatively the same to that of the two previous Xbox games just that this time the A.I. is much better than usual, and you’ll have to be much more strategic about which moves you use, as repeating the same one over and over will land you with a counter attack from your opposition, and time that you’ll be open for attack. Making the game harder in general has really helped differentiate this from the others in the series. As usual, there are a handful of new characters. They fit well, and are all unique. However, there are huge balance issues, as a handful of the cast are incredibly fast and great for cheap players and the rest are a bit slower. This causes quite a problem in the multiplayer, but also in the single player modes as you really don’t want to face Hitomi when you’re trying to get a gold in time attack.
The standard modes apply and if you’ve played DOA before, you’ll be comfortable. Unfortunately, this seems to highlight just how little DOA has changed in the past 5 years.
The graphics in the game have been improved, but only ever so slightly. You can now see veins on muscular arms, and hair seems to flow more naturally, but the character models themselves aren’t any better looking than they were in DOAU. The animation has been improved, and the arenas are quite a bit more detailed, but to see these differences, you’ll have to look pretty closely.
The super crazy FMV endings return, and yet again cross a line of public decency. Another part of the game that has only been partially upgraded, but this time they’re funnier. The game even has a brilliant ending FMV to wrap up almost every facet of the storyline.
The sound in the games is pretty much the same mix of Japanese techno, and Japanese folk music. The voice snippets for the characters are still of a decent standard.
There’s still a tonne of things to do as always. T

Dead or Alive 4 is probably one of the best fighting games ever made. I myself had never played one before and thought I would give it a try because Ryu from Ninja Gaiden was in it. It was so hard to learn but once I finally figured it all out I really enjoyed the game alot. Online is so hard because these guys/girls learn to moves so well that sometimes you cant even get off a hit. Check it out have some fun. Great for playing with friends also.

Team ninja has always made amazing games and DOA4 is no exception they have made some beautifull levels and even beautifull ragdoll physics on the clothings and charcter knockdown.... the online play is what its all about much like doa 3 and doa ultimate was..... only now they added some fun lobbys and avatars along with items to dress your avatar up... if you like virtual fighter and soul caliber at least give this game a shot
